THE OPPEN APPROACH
Finding the right fit is the whole point.
There's no shortage of advice out there. Books, podcasts, ranking lists, consultants promising Ivy League placements — all of it designed to make you feel like you're already behind.
I built Oppen Admissions because I've been that parent. I read everything, followed every thread, and still felt unsure. What families actually need isn't more information — it's a steady, experienced guide who knows which information matters for your student.
My approach is grounded, personal, and built around one question: where will your student genuinely thrive? The answer is rarely the most famous name on the list.
You work with me, not a team of strangers.
I'm a solo consultant, which means your student gets consistent attention from one person who actually knows them — not a rotating cast of advisors.
Fit over prestige, every time.
A school that ranks #4 but where your student won't be challenged, supported, or happy isn't a win. I help families think clearly about what matters — and tune out what doesn't.
Integrity built into every step.
As an IECA member, I follow the highest ethical standards in the field. Your student's application will be theirs — authentic, honest, and something they're proud of.
THE PROCESS
Three phases. One calm path forward.
Understand your student
I start with a deep-dive strategy session — who your student is, what they care about, where they want to be in four years. No questionnaires. A real conversation.
Build the right list & story
I create a personalized school list and help your student develop the through-line of their application — the honest, compelling narrative that connects their activities, essays, and goals.
Apply with confidence
We work through every piece of the application together — essays, supplements, deadlines, financial aid comparisons — until your student submits something they're genuinely proud of.
ABOUT KAREN
I became a counselor because I needed one.
I'm Karen Oppen — Independent Educational Consultant, founder of Oppen Admissions, and parent of four kids who went through this exact process. I know what it feels like to read all the books, listen to all the podcasts, and still feel completely uncertain.
That frustration is what led me here. After years of volunteering in K–12 schools and watching families struggle with the same anxiety, I got my certifications and built a practice around the kind of guidance I wished we'd had.
I'm a member of IECA — the Independent Educational Consultants Association, the profession's highest standard — and hold a certificate from NACAC, the National Association for College Admission Counseling. I'm also based right here in Phoenix, which means I understand the schools, the competition, and the landscape your student is navigating.
✦IECA Member — Independent Educational Consultants Association. Requires advanced degree, 3+ years experience, 50+ campus visits, and annual ethics review.
✦NACAC Certificate — National Association for College Admission Counseling professional credential.
✦BS, Chemical Engineering — NC State University. A background in problem-solving that shows up in how I approach every student's path.

Kids of my own through the college process — I'm not guessing at what families experience.
